2 ingredient Yogurt – Yes You Can!

If I could give you only ONE reason only to pick up an Instant Pot this would be it.

You can make your own Greek Yogurt!

AND it tastes great.

AND it saves you money!

For equipment you only need an Instant Pot (I use a 6 qt) and a whisk.

For ingredients you only need milk and a tbsp of yogurt. You get perfect thick yogurt!

Does this sound hard? No.
There are more in depth complicated – thermometer needed type yogurt recipes but this is NOT one of those.

If you’re chasing that protein fix and yogurt is a big part of your breakfasts, dips, desserts than you have got to try this.

So lets do this!

what you need

  • 6 qt Instant Pot
  • Whisk (fork is fine)

ingredients

  • 1.5 litre ultra pure milk like Lactantia (Canadian) or Fairlife(US) – regular milk won’t work
(These are put through ultra filtration which bumps up the protein and makes them lactose free)
  • Yogurt starter – 1 tbsp of yogurt that shows active cultures in the ingredients (Greek yogurt)
(Feel free to freeze a tbsp when you have a freshly opened yogurt for use later to make your own)

this is how we do it (summary)

  1. Defrost your starter
  2. Clean your equipment
  3. Whisk starter in to milk
  4. Take ring seal out of lid.
  5. Set to 9hrs – check vent is open
  6. Place in fridge overnight

That’s all there is to it!
BUT there are important details not to be missed so read through this detailed version at least one time.

this is how we do it (detailed version)

  1. Clean your whisk and IP liner in hot soapy water and rinse well!
OPTIONAL: You can follow up by adding 1 cup of water and setting Pressure Cook to HIGH for 0 minutes (not a typo), this will extra disinfect your yogurt vessel.
  2. Pour enough milk into the pot to cover the bottom, add the starter – whisk well.
  3. Add remaining milk into pot, whisking the whole time.
  4. Remove the rubber ring in the lid (can hold smells from past meals and you don’t need it for this).
You can also use any lid that fits well.
  5. Close the lid.
  6. Make sure the vent set to ‘venting’ no seal is required for this part.
  7. Press the yogurt setting and set to 9 hours.
You will notice the timer counts up to 9 hours instead of the usual countdown.

this is how we do it (after the 9hrs is up)

  • Remove the liner with the yogurt from the Instant Pot Base.
OPTIONAL: Place a tea towel on top of the pot and then the lid (upside down over the towel if its hard to get in the fridge).
  • Refrigerate overnight (12hrs at least)

    DONE!

You now have 6 cups of creamy, fresh yogurt.

Do this one time and you’ll be hooked, the instructions above are very detailed but once you know all the steps it just becomes a part of your meal prep game.

Serving Ideas

  • Breakfast bowls → granola + fruit + drizzle of honey
  • Parfaits → layer yogurt, fruit, granola (looks fancy, takes 2 mins)
  • Smoothies → adds creaminess + protein
  • Quick snack → yogurt + maple syrup + pinch of cinnamon
  • Frozen yogurt pops → blend + freeze
  • Yogurt bark → spread, top, freeze, break
  • Sauces → tzatziki, garlic dip, herby drizzle
  • Salad dressing → yogurt + lemon + olive oil + salt
  • Marinades → especially for chicken (makes it crazy tender)
  • Flatbreads / naan → yogurt in dough = soft + chewy

Kitchen Hacks

  • Swap for sour cream (tacos, baked potatoes)
  • Stir into soups for creaminess
  • Add to mashed potatoes
  • Use in creamy pasta sauces (lighter but still rich)
